Fridays community night ice climbing competition @ CityRock

These are the best images from Friday nights Ice climbing competition at City Rock climbing gym. Names will be updated as soon as possible. If you wish to purchase a specific image as a print please email me describing which image you are interested in, and if you are interested in a specific participant please send me an email describing the clothing and I will reply if I do or don't have any quality shots matching that description.

On the technical side, these are probably some of the most difficult images to capture having been in such a large interior space, with dismal electric lights, and the vertical surface for climbing is not conducive to shifting perspective, or easily moving or adjusting my speedlights. The overhead perspective shots were captured using a very convenient "rappel cave" located above a route, with one remote SB800 speedlight below the route with adjustable power via radiopoopper w/ RPcube, an SB900 on manual with a radiopopper sitting on a platform about 35 feet behind and 20 feet below the climber to fill in a few details, while another SB900 w/ radiopopper also on manual was used to fill in the face and other detail was clamped to a ceiling support directly above the "rappel cave". The other shots used the adjustable SB800 on the floor pointing up under the roof section, with one of the SB900's clamped to a ladder 13ft. above the floor with a diffuser pointing towards the roof section as a fill light.

Another challenge noted that evening, and one which would become even more pronounced on Saturday, is that as I would setup for a prime shot to capture a climber in the best location for executing a photogenic move, the climber would fall. I wonder if this was as frustrating for me as it was for the climber?

Up next, Saturdays professional competition.
